Tell Me About Marble

May 01 2013

Northbay Stone Works is a Marin based company specializing in stone fabrication and installation. We have a successful history of providing services for both new and commercial construction with marble and limestone as well as in home renovations for kitchens and bathrooms.

Marble is a non foliated metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone, composed mostly of calcite (a crystalline form of calcium carbonate) Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from regional or, rarely, contact metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks (eitherlimestone or dolomite rock) or metamorphism of older marble. This metamorphic process causes a complete recrystallization of the original rock into an interlocking calcite, aragonite and or dolomite crystal. It is used extensively used for sculpture, and as a building material for kitchen countertops, bathroom showers, vanities and floors.

Pure white marble is a result of metamorphism of very pure limestone. The swirls and veins of many colored marbles varieties are usually due to mineral impurities, such as iron oxides, sand, and silt. Marble like Carrara has been used since the time of ancient Rome. For centuries Italian craftsmen have used Carrara Marble for various applications.

Due to the nature of the calcite mineral group Northbay Stone Works recommends Honing of all marble kitchen countertops. The honing process produces a fine smooth matt finish for your marble countertop. Etching will occur on all marble when a low PH or light acid such as vinegar, soft drinks, or citrus comes in contact with this stone. The visible etching is minimized when the surface is honed. Due to this chemical reaction the polish on the marble surface is the first etching that is visible to the eye.
